For low risk pregnancies, home birth with a Certified Professional Midwife is equally as safe as hospital birth, but involves many fewer interventions (such as caesarian section, forceps deliveries, and vacuum extraction). See Kenneth C. Johnson & Betty-Anne Daviss, Outcomes of planned home births with certified professional midwives: large prospective study in North America, British Medical Journal, June 18 2005
"Midwives are the most cost-effective and appropriate primary caregivers for all childbearing women in all instances and in all settings. Home is the most appropriate birth setting for most childbearing women." World Health Organization Report on Health Promotion and Birth, 1986
Midwifery care would lower state health care costs. Certified Professional Midwives provide safe care at a fraction of the cost of hospital-based care. At a time of skyrocketing health care costs, Indiana should embrace midwives as a way to cut costs without cutting corners
"Midwifery belongs to the people. It is a fundamental human right for a woman to choose the manner in which she will give birth." Ina May Gaskin, Midwife
