Do you believe parents in Indiana have the right to give birth to their children at home? If so, do you believe the professional midwives they hire to assist them should be able to practice legally? We need your voice at the Statehouse next week!
The Indiana Midwifery Taskforce will be holding our annual rally next Thursday morning, and we need a passionate showing of consumers. Every year has seen progress in our goal of passing a bill to license Certified Professional Midwives in Indiana. This event will be coinciding with the unveiling of a large national campaign to push for the licensure of CPMs in the states where they are still illegal. Many of these are Midwestern states, and we have seen an increase recently in investigations and prosecutions of Midwestern midwives. It will take a vocal consumer-led movement to keep this from happening here in Indiana.
So load up the kids, get your granny, grab any willing friends, and come spend part of next Thursday morning at the Statehouse. Feel free to make signs (no sticks, though) and/or decorate your kids. Be creative and colorful: we're expecting the media! As usual, we will have both planned speakers and the chance for you to address the gathering, opportunities for you to seek out your legislators, and snacks. This is a great educational activity for citizens of all ages, plus there will be plenty of time to hit the Children's Museum in the afternoon before you head home. If you've never experienced the fun of grassroots political action, you need to join us. At the state political level, individual voices do make a difference. The sight of parents and their kids at the Statehouse always has a huge impact.
We will be rallying from 9:30-12:30pm on the main floor of the Statehouse. The address is 200 W. Washington Street and is easy to find via Google maps. Parking structures are available on the east and west sides of the building, and there is some on-street metered parking as well. Allow yourselves a few extra minutes to get parked and into the building.
